Contrary to what she’d been expecting, Jack hadn’t met Adelaide at JFK. Instead, his assistant had sent a terse email that said:

Mr. Nolan had to fly out early. He’ll meet you upon your arrival.

That was more than fine with Adelaide. All of this—leaving the country, the flight overseas, Europe—was new to her, so she knew she’d fumble around the airport like a naive idiot and probably draw impatient glares from him all the while. Not to mention that she had a paper to finish up for a sophomore named Janelle Roberts, which she promised herself would be the actual last one she did for anyone.

Probably.

So, it really was better that Jack had gone on ahead. His reaction to finding out she was in college had been bad enough; she didn’t want to imagine what he’d be like if he found out about her little side hustle.

While the rest of the plane napped, she stayed awake, working. She finished the paper just as the captain announced that they were making their final descent into Heathrow. Packing up her things, she opened the shade on the window and scanned the landscape below for Big Ben. But the city was swathed in a fog that reduced visibility to nil.

I probably won’t even get a chance to go sightseeing, she thought dismally.

The moment she stepped onto the escalator to the baggage claim concourse, she saw a man standing at the foot of the steps, holding a sign that said Wright.

“That’s me,” she greeted, yawning. Even wearing Katy’s chic but comfortable travel outfit—a loose black dress, a leather jacket, and knee-high boots—she still felt as if she’d been twisted into a pretzel.

The man wordlessly took her carry-on and ushered her to a black town car.

As he helped her in, she paged through the travel papers Edith had given her. “It says here that I’m supposed to be staying in Mayfair? Is that far?”

The driver shook his head. “Sorry, miss, but the car was booked to take you directly to the gallery.”

“The gallery?” She dragged out her ponytail and raked her fingers through her hair, panicking, as the driver nodded and pulled away from the curb.

Great. She grabbed her compact from her purse and powdered the shine from her nose, and then she added a little color to her lips. She looked down at her long, shapeless black dress. Jack would undoubtedly find something to criticize about it.

Then again, he’d also said, “It works better if we do this like friends.”

Friends didn’t criticize each other’s wardrobe choices.

Of course, friends also didn’t pay friends to fly halfway around the world when they needed to look good, and he’d seemed to have no problem doing that.

But something had shifted the last time they were together. That she was sure of. He’d seen her as more than just arm candy. He’d seen her as a person. She only hoped that now that his all-important work was once again involved, he wouldn’t revert to the asshole version of himself she hated.
